According to the myth of the ancient Greeks, the origin of Virgo can be traced to the story of Persephone. Hades, god of the Underworld, fell in love with Persephone one summer day and abducted her to be his bride. Her mother, Demeter, refused this union and made a bargain with her father Zeus to keep Persephone with her for the first six months of the year and the rest could be spent with her husband. Demeter would freeze the earth when Persephone left her side and this is how the Greeks explained the seasons. The Virgo constellations brightest star is Spica; Spica comes from the latin meaning ‘ear of grain’. The Virgo constellation holds the wheat to be harvested before Fall. Persephone is depicted in artwork holding sheafs of grain.
